The storage, handling and transportation of dangerous goods are regulated by international and Australian national, state and territory laws and codes. National organisations involved in the publication of relevant standards, regulations, codes, and guidelines include:
An SAI Global document titled Guide to Standards – Dangerous Goods, specific to Australia, provides a handy overview to relevant laws, standards, regulations and codes. In this document, you will find relevant references to publications like:
- Safe Work Australia Work Health and Safety Regulations (WHS) which define workplace hazardous substances and dangerous goods, especially hazardous chemicals.
- An Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Good by Road and Rail (ADG Code). This code is relevant to dangerous goods cabinets, both in terms of storage and transportation.
- Australian Standards 1940 (2004) titled The Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids,
- Government of Western Australia – Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004.
What are hazardous substances and goods?
In general, dangerous goods include substances that contain physical, chemical, or toxicity properties which expose people or property to hazards. Examples of this consisted of explosives and flammable liquids and gases, corrosives and chemically reactive or highly toxic substances.
One or more of these substances may be stored, or be a part of industrial processing in different industries.
Dangerous goods storage cabinets manufactured by S.E.P.M.A.R.
Since 1995, S.E.P.M.A.R, as a wholly-owned and operated company in Western Australia, has been one of the leaders in manufacturing and supplying quality dangerous goods cabinets, as well as providing service for installation and maintenance of the products.
We recognise the requirement to keep plants and workplaces safe at all times. This means that hazardous materials must be safely stored and handled at all times. It is especially true for laboratories, mining companies and manufacturing plants handling hazardous goods.
These companies need to keep dangerous goods and materials where they are needed so that employees can work efficiently and without disruption while still complying with safety regulations.
Our dangerous goods storage cabinets provide temporary storage solutions as well as long-term storage requirements. We offer a range of six different types of cabinets that can be supplied in different sizes. They are suitable for the storage of materials such as:
- Flammable liquids or gases
- Corrosive materials
- Oxidising materials
- Toxic materials
- Organic Peroxides
Our dangerous goods cabinets are built with high quality materials and fitted with our own patented locking mechanism and they comply with or exceed the Australian AS1940 safety standard.
- Cabinet walls and doors are doubled-skimmed and coated to neutralise the penetration of hazardous chemicals.
- Six different types of cabinets can be supplied in sizes ranging from 30 litres, suitable for placement either under or on top of standard work benches. The upper range cabinets have capacities of 250 litres as stand-alone cabinets.
With some 30 years of experience, initially servicing and maintaining fire fighting equipment, we identified a clear demand for safety cabinets that automatically close and lock. We initially found that cabinets in use contained somewhere between 7 and 14 moving parts that often caused problems with the closing and locking action.
An additional problem we found was the need to provide safety showers and eye washing units in close proximity to dangerous goods storage facilities. Such stations are fitted with filters and valves and the regular removal of hazardous materials from the cabinets often caused blockage of the filters and valves in these stations.
We are proud to reveal that we have invented and patented a single moving part door closing system. This system enables the effective closing of insulated double doors fitted with safety seals. This patented locking system is manufactured with alloy parts at contact points. This effectively reduces the risk of sparking between metal contact points used by other manufacturers. Our system only uses one single moving part.
To make the closing mechanism of our patented system complete, it allows doors to be open 270 degrees, a huge improvement from cabinets that only allow the doors to open 90-180 degrees. You can imagine how much easier it will be to remove and restack the contents of our cabinets.
This unique invention with only one moving part increases reliability and reduces scheduled maintenance and repair costs.
You can see that our dangerous goods storage cabinets provide premier solutions for the safe storage of dangerous goods storage.
Our company logo S.E.P.M.A.R is an acronym for Safety Equipment, Preventative Maintenance and Repair. We are a premier supplier in the provision of dangerous goods storage and transport.
In addition to our products, we offer separation units for hazardous goods transport, fire cabinets, emergency safety showers, and eyewash stations for first aid relief to chemical contact with the eyes, as well as the brand of fire equipment
